Be prepared, plan ahead, and use your time wisely. Begin with resources that must stay in the KV Library. If you need help from your teacher or Mrs. Quinn, talk to him/her early to schedule one-on-one time. |
1. Always begin your research with the project information your teacher has provided. Make sure you understand the question your research will answer, and what your final product will be. Ask questions before you begin and as you're researching.
2. Follow the Big 6 model (see the information on the left of this screen).
3. Explore the resources available in print and online until you find information related to your research question.
4. READ! As you read, you're learning details that will help you to find more information. Take your time, and really absorb the information. Ask your teacher questions.
5. When you find a good source of information, STOP and CITE it (use Mrs. Quinn's color-coded organizers, then enter the information into NoodleTools). Then TAKE NOTES.
6. Make sure the information you're recording answers your research question: FOCUS.
7. Explore the websites suggested by your teacher and Mrs. Quinn. Focus on the sites that provide the details you need. Remember to CITE as you go.
8. Look for additional resources in KV's databases and through SweetSearch (search engine). Remember to think about your search terms, start with a broad view and narrow your results, use synonyms, and only use the websites that you have evaluated (see Mrs. Quinn for more information). Remember to CITE as you go.
9. Keep your work well-organized. Check your focus regularly to ensure that you are answering your research question. If you have a rubric, use it as a checklist.
10. Bring all of your pieces together, write, edit, re-write, ask a friend to exchange work to help edit one another's project.
Use Destiny to locate the books on our shelves. Be sure to look in the Non-Fiction and the Reference sections of the library. Search using broad terms first, then narrow your topic based on the number of results returned.
